Kruglova Olga Vladimirovna (1924 – 1986)
Kruglova Olga Vladimirovna - an Honoured Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation. She was born in the Yaroslavl Region. She studied in the Yaroslavl Art College at the Department of Painting. Between 1945 and 1950 she studied in the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at the Faculty of Theory and History of Fine Art. In 1950, she arrived at the Zagorsk Museum where she appointed in charge of the Folk Art Department.
Kruglova was a purposeful and thoughtful collector. She organized 25 expeditions to the most remote and wild districts of the Russian North and the Volga area. Thanks to them, the collection of folk art ranked one of the best in Russia. O.V. Kruglova’s collecting was based on scientific methods. She carefully examined several neighboring regions, marked routs, studied documents and literature on history of villages and handicrafts.
Olga Vladimirovna Kruglova made a number of important discoveries. In 1958, she managed to specify the centers producing objects decorated with ornamental painting on the white background. Several expeditions to the Vologda Regions and neighboring districts of the Kostroma and Yaroslavl Regions discovered a new original type of distaffs. An outstanding result of Kruglova’s expeditions was the record of hundreds craftsmen’s names. O. Kruglova was a talented exhibition designer of a faultless taste. The display “Russian Folk Art”, including the design project, adjustment of old show-cases and assembling of the exhibits, was created exclusively by the Museum workers. The exposition was academically strict, yet emotional and sincere. It fascinated millions of visitors for several decades.
O.V. Kruglova published over 30 works, over 60 works are preserved in the archive of the Sergiev Posad Museum. The expedition results are summarized in the comprehensive album “Traditional Russian Carved and painted Woodwork (M., 1974), four times republished in different languages. The richest material is presented in the book “Traditional Painting of the Northern Dvina” (M., 1987), catalogues of the exhibitions “Severnye pryalki” (Vologda, 1969) [“Northern Distaffs”], “Russkiye pryalki” (Tula, 1971) [Russian Distaffs].
