Olsufyev Yury Alexandrovich (1878 – 1937)
Olsufyev Yury Alexandrovich - a museum worker, specialist in Old Russian art and restoration. His father was an adjutant-general and Hofmarschal, subsequently a court manager of the Moscow Kremlin. Yu. Olsufyev graduate from the Law Department of the St. Petersburg University. Since 1902 he lived in his estate Buitsy in the Tula Guberniya. He was a member of the Moscow Archeology Institute, Chairman of the Tula Society of Preservation of Art and History Monuments, Member of the Tula Archive Commission and other national scientific societies. In 1912 – 1914, he published six volumes of “Art and History Monuments of the Tula Guberniya”. In March, 1917, Yu. Olsufyev and his wife settled in Sergiev Posad. On October 28, 1918, he became a member of the Commission on Preservation of Art and History Monuments of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra and took part in its first meeting. At first he was engaged with the problems of restoration of the Trinity Cathedral, investigated miniatures in the books from the Lavra library, together with P.A. Florensky he made a scientific description of the icons from the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, and coped with current problems. In September, 1919 Yu.A. Olsufyev was appointed Chairman of the Commission, in March, 1920, when it was reorganized he applied for resignation.
In August, 1920, Yu.A. Olsufyev was invited to the museum as a part-time expert in Old Russian painting and miniatures. In 1920, he was also a member of the Commission on passing the Lavra treasures to the State. Thanks to him a lot of artistic and historic treasures were saved. Working in the Commission, Yu.A. Olsufyev recorded crosses, old silver, icons, miniatures and ornaments from the Sacristy books. He also wrote a number of theoretical works on Old Russian art. On his initiative and with his participation in March, 1924, the exhibition of the 14th – 16th century art was organized. He recorded the cleaning stages of icon restoration carried out by N.A. Baranov. In 1925, Yu.A. Olsufyev headed the department of “Enamel, Filigree, Niello; Carving in Wood, Metal and Bone”. In 1927, he became a member of the Administration of the Sergiev History and Art Museum.
In spring, 1928, the Museum was attacked by the press. The book “Ambrose , the Trinity Carver of the 15th century”, written by Yu.A. Olsufyev and P.A. Florensky , was especially criticized. Yury Alexandrovich Olsufyev managed to escape arrest. Then, he worked in the Central State Restoration Workshops (CSRW) and saved hundreds of icons. When the CSRW were closed, he worked in the State Tretyakov Gallery and supervized the Section of Old Russian painting in the restoration laboratory. In 1935 – 1936, “The Soviet Museum” journal published his fundamental work “Voprosy form drevnerusskoi zhivopici” (Problems of Form in Old Russian Painting”. In January 24, 1938, Yu.A. Olsufyev was accused of anti-soviet propaganda, arrested and sentenced to death. On March 14, he was shot.
