Introduction |
The collection of the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve amounts to over 120 thousand exhibits. The main part of the collection contains masterpieces, which used to belong to the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery. They were created by many generations of talented masons, artists, gold- and silversmiths. The Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery was a kind of depositary of artistic treasures that came as donations of grand and appanage
princes, tsars , boyars, clergy and ordinary people. Thus, “The Sacristy collection of the artistic treasures of the Medieval period of the 14th – 17th century” was formed. Comprehensive and Varied, it includes manuscript and old printed books, icons, embroidery, small-size sculptures, works of gold- and silversmiths
This collection is supplemented and completed by “The Sacristy collection of art treasures of the New Period of the 18th – 19th century” which was also formed within the walls of the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery. It includes remarkable samples of painting, drawing and applied art which once decorated the interiors of the higher clergy residences.
Since ancient time the Monastery and its environs were famous for craftsmen engaged in miniature wood-carving, toy production, golden thread embroidery, etc. Their works formed the basis for the foundation of the department of Russian folk art in 1947. It included the collections of the Moscow Handicrafts Museum and the Local History Museum. As the result of the expeditions
this collection is considerably enlarged. Now the Museum possesses one of the richest collections of the 18th – 21st century applied and decorative art and of the 17th – early 20th century folk art.
The regular Museum excavations permitted to form an archeological collection. The unique collection of objects of everyday life, documents, weapons, costumes and old photographs presented in the Museum acquaints visitors with history of Sergiev Posad of the 17th – early 20th century.
The Museum displays are constantly innovated and developed. Every year temporary exhibitions are organized. They present the rich Museum collections and recent works of local artists
