Mayasova Nataliya Andreyevna (1919 – 2006)
Mayasova Nataliya Andreyevna graduated from the Moscow State University in 1943. Between 1945 and 1962 she was Deputy Director for scientific research. She was a specialist in art history and she directed the museum turning it from the regional cultural institute into the museum of the national status.
Doctor of Art History, Academician G.I. Vzdornov, who came to the museum in 1958, wrote: ”… in the 1950s – 1960s, the museum staff was very strong…The museum was managed by an old bolshevik writer G.A. Oksky who did not interfere with scientific research and gave his workers a free hand. Deputy Director was Natalyay Andreyevna Maysova – an outstanding specialist in Old Russian embroidery…A few years passed and the members of the staff went different ways: Olga Andreyevna – to Pushkin House in Leningrad, T.V. Nikolayeva – to the Archeology Institute of the USSR Academy of Science in Moscow, N.a. Mayasova – to the Museums of the Moscow Kremlin, I.I. Bureichenko – to the Institute of Russian History of the USSR Academy of Science, I became a post-graduate student of the Art History Institute of the USSR Academy of Science. But we all shared the best memories of the museum; it was our scientific school and even our greatest affection…”
In the 1950s – 1960s, thanks to N.A. Mayasova activity the Russian collections were supplemented with various expedition acquisitions. At that time the Zagorsk Museum resumed “Soobshcheniya” published in 1955, 1958, 1960. They became a remarkable event in the scientific life of Moscow and its environs. Since 1962, N.A. Mayasova worked in the State Moscow Kremlin Museums as a curator of the Annunciation Cathedral which was described in the fundamental work, published under her supervision. Between 1972 – 1979 N.A. Mayasova was Deputy Director for scientific research. In 1979, she passed to the publication department. For many years she was a permanent editor of “Materialy i issledovaniya” (“Materials and Research”, published since 1973.
N.A. Mayasova/s scientific interests were quite varied. But for many years she was a recognized specialist in Old Russian icon-embroidery. She dedicated her monographs and numerous articles to the problems of its investigation. A lot of items were introduced for scientific discussions. There were determined embroidery workshops, names of needlewomen, customers and origin of the outstanding samples. All Mayasova colleges, pupils and friends admired her young soul, inquisitive mind, permanent need to take an active part in all events in the Russian museum life, to deliver reports and to help young specialists. Sharing her experience with them, she brought up serious investigators of Old Russian embroidery.
