    Florensky Pavel Alexandrovich (1882 – 1937)

    Florensky  Pavel  Alexandrovich  (1882 – 1937). Florensky Pavel Alexandrovich - a philosopher, scientist, art historian, writer. He was a graduate of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Moscow University (1904) and of the Moscow Theological Academy (1908). He was a teacher of History of Philosophy in the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1911, he took holy orders. On October 28, 1918, at the first meeting of the Commission on Preservation of Art and History Monuments of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra he was appointed a member of the Commission in charge of the Sacristy and elected Scientific Secretary. On November 5, 1918, he was admitted to the All-Russia College on the Problems of the Museums and on Preservation of Art and History Monuments in the RSFSR People’s Commissariat of Education (Narkompros). During the first months of the Commission activity P.A. Florensky and P.N. Kapterev worked out a project of the organization of the Museum in the Lavra and together with Yu.A. Olsufyev Florensky prepared a scientific description of the icons from the Trinity Lavra collection. During the Commission period Florensky wrote his works: “Khramovoye deistvo kak sintez iskustv” (“The Cathedral Action as a Synthesis of Arts”), “Troitse-Sergieva Lavra i Rossia” (“The Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra and Russia”), “Molennye ikony Prepodobnogo Sergiya” (“The Prayer Icons of Venerable Sergius”), “Ikonostas” (“Iconostasis”), etc.

    In spring 1920, when the Commission was reorganized P. A. Florensky had to leave. But in August he was invited as an expert in silver and artistic metal. He co-operated with the Museum, founded as the result of the Commission activity, untill 1927. In 1923, his work “Opisj panagiy Troitse-Sergievoi Lavry XII –XIX vekov” (“The Description of Panagias of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra of the 12th – 19th cc”) was published, and in 1927, in co-authorship with Yu. A. Olsufyev he published the book “Amvrosy, troitsky rezchik XV veka” (“Ambrosy, the Trinity Carver of the 15th Century”).

    On March 22, 1928, P.A. Florensky was arrested for the first time in connection with the prosecution of “The Anti-Soviet group of the Black Hundred elements in the town of Sergievo”. He was sentenced “minus 6”, that meant that he was deprived of the right to live in six towns. On February 25, 1933, he was arrested for the second time, sentenced to 10 years of Corrective Labor Camps. On December 8, 1937, he was shot.
