Svirin Alexei Nikolayevich - an art historian, museum worker, teacher. He graduated from the Law Faculty of the Kazan University, attended lectures of the Philology Faculty. After the University he served in the office of the governor-general at the Far East. At that time he became one of six members of the ethnology circle.
I n 1916, a famous scientist A.N. Arsenyev, trying to help Svirin to move to Moscow or St. Petersburg, wrote to an official: “… I recommend him as a highly intelligent and well-educated man. On finishing his studies at the University he thoroughly learnt Russian architecture and we may say he has it on his fingertips… Besides, he knows Old Russian art very well. You’ll find him not just a competent museum worker, but a good honest man. His only drawback is unnecessary modesty”.
I n 1920, A.N. Svirin was appointed Head of the Control Department of the Moscow Military District in Sergiev. Since August 1920, he worked in the Commission on Preservation of Art and History Monuments of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. A.N. Svirin was the first curator of the Museum founded in 1920. Between 1925 and 1928, he was the Museum director. When he worked in the Museum, he published several articles, including the catalogue “Opis’ Tkanei 14 – 17 vv. b. Troitse-Sergievoi Lavry” (“The Inventory of Textiles of the 14th – 17th cc. of the Former Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra”) (1926). Then, A.N. Svirin worked in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in the State Museum of Fine Arts in Armenia, delivered lectures in the Higher Art and Technical Institute and in the Moscow State University named after M.V.
